MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Compliments of Christ”
13 January 2019

Have you ever paid anyone a compliment? How did they receive it? Did they thank you?  Did they get embarrassed? Did they respond in a prideful and arrogant way? Consider a compliment you paid someone that was truly sincere and meaningful.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Christ the Friend of Sinners
6 January 2019

As we begin a new year, the year of our Lord 2019 and everyone is in the mode of getting a “new start” or making New Year’s resolutions it is important that we take a moment and reflect on the past year and see if our lives have patterned themselves as God would have us. We need to see if we have sought to God first in our day to day lives as we read from Matthew 6:33

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
God’s Mindfulness of Man
30 December 2018

The title of our lesson this morning can be found in two locations. The first is in Psalm 8:4, “What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” The second is found in Hebrews 2:6, “But one testified in a certain place, saying: "What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him?”

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
When I Find Time”: The Non-Conversion of Felix
28 October 2018

Acts 24:24-27 comprise a classic case of procrastination in the Book of Acts: the non-conversion of Governor Felix. In the earlier part of the chapter, Paul was on trial for part of a day; in these verse, Felix was “on trial” for two years. Let’s begin by reading through our text Acts 24:24-27

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Paul’s Trial Before Felix
21 October 2018

The last seven chapters of Acts tell of Paul as a prisoner – briefly in Jerusalem (22:24), then two years in Caesarea (23:33-35; 24:27), followed by at least two years in Rome (28:16, 30). Paul was no stranger to prison life.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Paul Taken To Caesarea
14 October 2018

At the conclusion of our last study we found the commander with a very challenging decision to make concerning the well being of the apostle Paul, a Roman citizen, listen to what he determines to do in Acts 23:22, “So the commander let the young man depart, and commanded him, "Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me."

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
An Encouraging Vision & A Murderous Conspiracy Exposed
7 October 2018

At the end of our last lesson the apostle Paul had been returned to his prison cell. It was dark, but he could not sleep. G. Campbell Morgan called that night “one of the darkest …in the history of Paul.” The buffeting that the apostle Paul had received in the Council chambers had aggravated the wounds he had received when the mob beat him and had given him fresh aches and pains.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Paul Before the Sanhedrin
30 September 2018

If you recall we closed our lesson last week with Acts 22:22-30, where the identity of Paul’s citizenship is revealed to the commander after Paul gave his defense to the mob, “And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Paul Arrested
16 September 2018

Just as Agabus said in Acts 21:11 that Paul would be arrested, when we reach Acts 21:26 we begin reading concerning the arrest of Paul.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
The Bible and Science
9 September 2018

Along with serving as a minister for the Pekin church of Christ I serve the East Washington School Corporation as the new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Instructor in the elementary school. You may have heard those four words referred to as “STEM.” As a certified Engineering, Technology, education teacher the opportunity presented itself at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. It is a brand new “specials” class.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
No Reserve, No Retreat, and No Regrets”
2 September 2018

Now, before we begin our lesson there is a Psalm we want to read in preparation for what we are about to study. The reasoning for this, well, it is quite possible the apostle Paul may have had this on his mind just as many do as they find themselves in the place of danger and woe, it is David’s Psalm 23:1-6,

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Paul’s Farewell Speech
26 August 2018

Seven sermons by Paul are recorded in the Book of Acts, excluding his brief words in Lystra (14:14-18). Only one is addressed to Christians – the one in Acts 20:18-35.  Today we are going to break this section of Scripture, Paul’s Farewell Speech into two parts: (1) Paul Reviews His Ministry (20:17-24); (2) Paul Admonishes the Ephesian Elders (20:25-35).

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Concern For Brethren
12 August 2018

In Acts 20:1-6 we read this, “After the uproar had ceased, Paul called the disciples to himself, embraced them, and departed to go to Macedonia. 2 Now when he had gone over that region and encouraged them with many words, he came to Greece 3 and stayed three months.

How To Grow A Church

Living in Southern Indiana it is very easy to see that our part of the world is filled with farm land. All around us you will find corn fields, soybean fiends, hay fields, pastures and even gardens.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
A Preacher I Can’t Help Admiring
22 July 2018

We want to begin our study this morning by reading through Acts 18:24-28, for this is where we the character all preachers, elders, and Christians need to possess

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Lessons From Corinth
15 July 2018

We want to begin our study this morning by reading through Acts 18:1-10, for this is where we obtain our first lesson from Corinth, “After these things Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Success in God’s Eyes
1 July 2018

A couple of weeks ago we took a break from our studies in the book of Acts. Now it’s time to return to that study so we may continue to learn more about the first 33 or so years of the Lord’s church.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Sermon in Song: Heaven
3 June 2018

For this morning’s lesson we are going to take a break from our journey through the book of Acts and take the lesson time today to share with you something special we do from time to time in our worship of our God, we do what is called a “Sermon in Song.” This is a sermon where we apply the apostle Paul’s instructions in Colossians 3:16

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Reactions To The Gospel
27 May 2018

When Jesus explained the Parable of the Sower, He said that the good soil stood for those “Who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance” (Luke 8:15).

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Train Up A Child & The Sacrifice of A Mother
20 May 2018

As we continue our journey through the book of Acts we come to Acts 16. It is in this chapter that we learn of yet another traveling companion for the apostle Paul. Remember Paul and Barnabas split up due to a disagreement with John Mark and took with him Silas (Acts 15:39-40). In Acts 16 we are introduced to the man who became as J.W. McGarvey states, “the dearest friend[Paul] ever knew,” and as Ken Durham says, “the son in the faith he never had in the flesh,”

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Door-Slammers of Today
13 May 2018

For our lesson today we need to take the time and read through Acts 15:1-35 to help us understand the idea behind “Door-Slammers of Today”,

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Preaching & Persecution Adoration & Abuse
6 May 2018

A preacher once described how he was treated at the first place he preached: “The first year, they idolized me. The second year, they tantalized me. The third year, they pulverized me.” He went from one extreme to the other in a few years, but Paul went from being idolized to being pulverized in a few hours. When we turn over to Acts 14:1-19 we learn about what happened to Paul

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Every Christian Is A Missionary
29 April 2018
Every Christian Is A Missionary (Acts 13)

Barnabas and Saul Selected By The Holy Spirit (13:1-3)
The return of Barnabas and Saul in Acts12:25 sets the stage for the beginning of chapter 13. Acts 13:1-3 is the watershed of the Book of Acts. Before this passage, the key figure is Peter, the key city is Jerusalem, and the key recipients of the gospel are Jews. After 13:1-3, the key figure is Paul, the key city is Antioch in Syria, and the key recipients of the gospel are Gentiles.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
When Peter Was Called To Account
8 April 2018

In days gone by, in the mansions of England, often only the drawing room and parlor had carpets. To be called before the master of the house, usually for a reprimand, was to be “called on the carpet,” or “carpeted.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Breaking Down The Walls
01 April 2018

After World War II, Berlin was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. In 1961, the Communists erected the infamous Berlin Wall to keep people from leaving East Berlin. Through the years, many tried to escape over the wall; more than 170 died in the attempt. It was amazing when in November 1989 the news came that the Berlin Wall had fallen.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Saul’s Conversion or What A Blind Man Saw
18 March 2018

Over the last several weeks we have examined the first 8 chapters of the Book of Acts. We have seen Jesus leave the apostles and instruct them to stay in Jerusalem in Acts 1. We learned from Acts 2 of the actual establishment of the church on the Day of Pentecost. We learned about the apostles and the healing of a lame man in Acts 3 and of the apostle’s being arrested in Acts 4.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
The Spread of The Church
11 March 2018

Over the last several weeks we have examined the first 7 chapters of the Book of Acts. We learned of the plot of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 and then we learned about the appointing of 7 to serve in Acts 6 and the stoning of Stephen in Acts 7. Now we come to Acts chapter 8.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
What Would I Be Willing to Die For?
4 March 2018

To begin our lesson this morning we start with the last 7 verses of Acts 7 and the death of Stephen, Acts 7:54-60, “When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Accepting Criticism
25 February 2018

If we think back to what we have covered from Acts 3, 4 and 5 we can see that Satan had first tried to stop the progress of the church from without – by having Peter and John arrested.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Church Discipline
11 February 2018

Well-publicized lawsuits in recent years have made some church leaders hesitant to exercise discipline as Jesus commanded. The case of Ananias and Sapphira underlines the need for church discipline. Let’s take a moment and read through Acts 5:1-11

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
Opposition from the Evil One
4 February 2018

The persecution against the church in Acts 4 should convince us that the devil is alive and well on the planet Earth. However, his power has been limited by Jesus’ death on the cross (Rev. 12:11).

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
The Gospel Peter Preached
28 January 2018

As we continue you on with our study of the Lord’s church, it’s establishment, it’s responsibilities in preaching the gospel we come primarily for our study today to Acts 3:1-26 where we read another sermon by the apostle Peter that pertains to yet further understanding of the Gospel of Christ. In this case however it begins with the first part of the chapter that deals with the healing of a lame man. The reason we being with this part of the chapter is due to the reaction of those who witnessed this healing. Let’s first read through Acts 3:1-10

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
How To Have A Great Meeting
21 January 2018

Before we get into our lesson this morning we’d like to bring to your attention our plan of study for the Year of our Lord 2018. We don’t know if you noticed, but for the Year of Our Lord 2017 we studied the Life of Christ.

MOMENTS OF TRUTH
The Establishment of the Kingdom/Church
14 January 2018

In Ephesians 3:10-11 we learn that throughout eternity existed the plans and purposes of God in establishing the kingdom, the church, “to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, 11 according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,…”

Moments of Truth
Taken Up In Glory
7 January 2018

We have come to the natural conclusion of the life of Christ: His Ascension. In His final words to His disciples, Jesus said that His suffering was to be followed by His glorification – which took place when He ascended:

To begin our lesson today we want to familiarize ourselves with Luke’s account of the Crucifixion of Jesus beginning in Luke 23:33 – 46,

The Trials of Jesus
26 November 2017

Those of us saved by Jesus’ blood look at His cross with mixed emotions: sadness for His suffering, but gladness for our salvation.

In The Garden
19 November 2017

Gardens loom large in the story of redemption: Eden, the garden of sin (Gen. 2:8, 17; Gen. 3); Gethsemane, the garden of agony (John 18:1; Matt. 26:36); the unnamed garden where Jesus was buried and then raised, the garden of hope (John 19:41, 42; 20); and Paradise, the garden of reward (Rev. 2:7). This study is on the second of these: Gethsemane.

Bearing Fruit For The Lord
12 November 2017

The upper room, the Passover feast, the approaching cross, the urgency of preparing the disciples – all this was the setting of Jesus’ matchless farewell discourse in John 14 – 16. During that discourse, the Lord delivered a challenging message on the vine and the branches.

Do This In Remembrance Of Me
5 November 2017

On Friday, November 24, 1961 from 10:30 to 11:00 pm a show aired on CBS Eyewitness entitled Big News in A Small Town. On this particular episode they visited our town of Salem, Indiana and my grandparents, Bill and Pauline Goen and their family, was chosen to help tell the story of our little town of Salem.

Risking Everything For The Lord
22 October 2017

Most of what Christ taught was startling, even shocking, to those who first heard Him. Such would have been the case with the parable of the talents.
Jesus spoke that parable to teach His disciples that they were to stay busy while they waited for His return. It was recorded through the guidance of the Spirit because, along with the apostles, all followers of the Lord must be reminded of this.

The Hour Has Come
15 October 2017

In John 12, we have what may be Jesus’ last public discourse, the last words the crowd heard Him speak until they heard His seven statements from the cross. If Jesus had been asked to speak on the title “If I Had One More Sermon to Preach,” what would He have said? Perhaps John 12:20-36 answers that question.

When Jesus Looks At Our Giving
8 October 2017

Let’s begin by reading our text in Mark 12:41-44, “Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.”

A Bible school teacher read the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (otherwise known as “the parable of the Pharisee and the publican”) in Luke 18:9-14 to her young students. She explained the need to avoid the arrogance of the Pharisee and to cultivate the humility of the publican. When she finished, she led her class in prayer: “Lord, we thank You that we are not like the Pharisee…”

The Rest of the Story
27 August 2017
Jeremy Goen
Radio commentator Paul Harvey is known for telling “the rest of the story.” After Jesus told of the lost sheep, silver, and son, he gave “the rest of the story” – about an older brother who had stayed home (Luke 15:25-32).
Repent or Perish
20 August 2017
Jeremy Goen
One day as Jesus was teaching, a report came concerning some “Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices (Luke 13:1b). We cannot be sure who these Galileans were, but Christ’s listeners evidently thought they had to be unusually evil to be killed in such a way. Jesus said to them in Luke 13:2-3, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered this fate? I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Mistakes of A Successful Businessman

Life has been compared to a display window in which [priceless items are marked with absurdly low price tags while worthless merchandise is priced ridiculously high. Another version of this illustration tells about someone breaking into the store at night and mixing up the price tags.

Lord Teach Us To Pray”
6 August 2017
Jeremy Goen
People have asked me how to do many things – how to tech and preach, how to prepare visual aids, how to write, even how to organize materials into a usable form – but no one has ever said to me, “Jeremy, teach me to pray.” That request, however, is the one Christ’s apostles made of Him in Luke 11:1, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught His disciples.”

I Was Blind But Now I See”
23 July 2017
Jeremy Goen
In John 9, we have one of the most vivid character studies in the Gospel Accounts: the man born blind who was healed by Jesus. This miracle of healing is the sixth of John’s seven “signs.” Each of the seven is special.

Would Be Disciples

Have you ever had a bad experience with a major purchase that came with a written, money-back guarantee? Later, when the product did not perform as promised, you asked for a refund. “Oh, no” you were told, “the problem you experienced is not covered in the guarantee. Read the fine print.”

Where Are The Dead?
2 July 2017
Jeremy Goen
The question “Where are the dead?” is one which interests many people. There is much we would like to know: where we will go immediately after death, whether or not our departed friends are conscious, whether or not loved ones are aware that we grieve their passing, and so on. Some of these questions, we cannot answer. It has been God’s will to keep some details from us regarding the next life.

Our Two Families
25 June 2017
Jeremy Goen
At the end of Jesus’ second tour of Galilee; he had a very busy day. The day started with the healing of a demoniac who was blind and unable to speak (Matt. 12:22, 23). This triggered the accusation that Christ cast out demons by the power of the devil (Matt. 12:23-30).

Love, Tears, and Forgiveness
18 April 2017
Jesus loved to eat with others. He ate with His disciples (Mark 14:14; Luke 22:15). He ate with His friends (Luke 10:38-42; John 12:1, 2). He ate with tax collectors and sinners (Luke 5:29, 30).

How To Get Along With Others (Part II)
11 April 2017
Remember One of the challenges we have in living the Christian life is getting along with people. Jesus understood this, so He said much in the Sermon on the Mount regarding relationships.

How To Get Along With Others (Part I)
4 June 2017
One of the challenges we have in living the Christian life is getting along with people. Jesus understood this, so He said much in the Sermon on the Mount regarding relationships. He said to be merciful to others and to be a peacemaker (Matt. 5:7, 9).

The Model Prayer
28 May 2017
Matt. 6:9-15; Luke 11
Introduction:
Children have a million questions – many of which start with “Why?” – Teen-agers are concerned about what they will do for a living – and how to tell if they are in love. Adults want to know how to prosper in life. However, Jesus’ disciples wanted to know how to pray.

Let Your Light Shine

The lesson this morning is the second part of our study of the second main section of Jesus Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5:13-16.

Equal With God
30 April 2017
Jeremy Goen
Our lesson today is focused on John 5. Where we begin with Jesus early great Galilean Ministry, where Jesus made a trip to Jerusalem. Let’s read John 5:2-9 to start

The Call To Discipleship
23 April 2017
Jeremy Goen
One of the most commonly used terms in the Bible for a follower of Jesus is “disciple” (Mt. 5:1; 8:21, 23; 9:19; Acts 6:1, 2, 7; 9:1). “Disciple” is a translation of the Greek word mathetes that means learner. In the fullest sense, a disciple was one who followed a teacher (Mt. 16:24), learned from the teacher (Mt. 11:29), and then followed the dictates of that teacher (Jn. 8:31). A close teacher/disciple relationship existed. A true disciple became like his teacher (Mt. 10:25).

God So Loved The World
16 April 2017
Jeremy Goen
In John 3:14-17, we have the most popular text in the Bible – That “golden” verse, John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

Seeking The Savior
9 April 2017
Jeremy Goen
People seek many things in life: fame, fortune, happiness. However, to borrow from Jesus words in Luke 10:42, “only one thing is necessary”: seeking the Lord.

Why God Chose Mary
2 April 2017

In the passage on “the worthy woman,” it is noted in Proverbs 31:28, “Her children rise up and bless her.” The KJV expresses the thought this way: “Her children arise up and call her blessed.”

Reaching Out To The Unlovable

Several years ago, a telephone company had an effective television advertising slogan: “Reach out and touch someone.” The idea was that someone was waiting a phone call from the viewer, someone who would be overjoyed by such a call.

How Jesus Dealt With Rejection
26 February 2017
Jeremy Goen
In order for us to comprehend how Jesus dealt with rejection let’s first recognize why the Jews rejected Jesus. For that we must ask some questions. Was there a good reason for the Jews to reject Christ?

A Voice Crying in the Wilderness”
12 February 2017
Jeremy Goen
The time was about A.D. 26; the place, Bethany beyond the Jordan. A preacher, about thirty years old, had been stirring up the people of both sides of the Dead Sea. A committee of priest and Levites came to him and asked in John 1:19, “Who are you?”

A Good Idea Gone Bad
22 January 2017
Jeremy Goen
Last week we discussed “When Is A Tradition Bad?” So, you might call this lesson the sister lesson to that one. We discussed A Tradition is Bad when it is bound on others.

Help My Unbelief”
1 January 2017
Jeremy Goen
AS we embark on a new year of our Lord 2017 the need for help with our belief in the Lord cannot be understated and we need to plead with God in prayer asking Him to please help us overcome any unbelief we may have in our Lord and Savior and in God Himself.

Worship: Lips or Heart?
11 December 2016
Jeremy Goen
Offering worship to God is so important and yet it is often a disappointing part of our lives, because we fail to receive from it the strength and edification we want to receive.

God’s Mindfulness of Man
4 December 2016
Jeremy Goen
The title of our lesson this morning can be found in two locations. The first is in Psalm 8:4, “What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?”

Having Favor With People
27 November 2016
Jeremy Goen
The English poet John Donne once wrote, "No man is an island unto himself." We might amend Donne's statement to "no Christian is an island unto himself." Christianity is a religion of relationships with people. We cannot live a hermit-like existence and fulfill the commands of Christ.
